Position Overview
We are looking for detail-oriented
Freelance Audio Annotation Specialists
to review short video clips and create accurate, structured annotations of the sounds they contain. Each clip is up to 10 seconds long and may include multiple overlapping sounds.
You will identify audible events, classify and describe their acoustic characteristics, and accurately mark when each event occurs. The project requires strong listening skills, attention to detail, clear written English, and the ability to consistently follow detailed annotation guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
Review short video clips and identify audible events, including subtle and overlapping sounds.
Classify sounds according to the provided annotation guidelines.
Describe the acoustic characteristics of identified sounds.
Accurately mark the timing of each sound event.
Review annotations for missed events, incorrect categories, incomplete timestamps, and inconsistent descriptions.
Incorporate reviewer feedback and make corrections when required.
Participate in training and calibration sessions to maintain consistent application of the guidelines.
Escalate ambiguous cases and guideline inconsistencies to the quality reviewer or project lead.
Meet agreed quality, productivity, and turnaround expectations.
Follow applicable confidentiality and data-handling requirements.
Key Requirements
Strong ability to distinguish and describe sounds in layered audio.
Prior experience in multimedia editing.
Excellent attention to detail and sustained concentration during repeated clip review.
Clear written English for concise and accurate sound descriptions.
Ability to understand and consistently follow detailed annotation instructions.
Basic understanding of audio concepts such as pitch, reverberation, timbre, loudness, and sound onset, or willingness to learn them during training.
Comfortable using browser-based tools and structured data-entry interfaces.
Ability to work independently and respond constructively to quality feedback.
Access to a suitable computer, headphones or earphones, and a quiet listening environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in audio/video annotation, sound-event labeling, transcription, media quality review, or data annotation.
Background or exposure to music, sound design, audio production, film, media studies, or related fields.
Familiarity with timeline-based annotation tools.
Experience identifying subtle background sounds and separating overlapping sound sources.
Compensation
Kenya:
KES 900 per hour
Working Requirements
Ability to repeatedly review audio/video using approved headphones or earphones at safe listening levels.
Willingness to review varied content, which may include horror, fights, weapons, crashes, or distress-related sounds, subject to the project's content policies.
Advanced audio engineering, programming, and verbatim transcription experience are not required.
Note: Candidates must have suitable headphones or earphones to participate in this project.
