Duties and Responsibilities
Cargo Operations: Oversees all cargo planning, loading, stumping, and unloading in ports, as well as the maintenance of cargo gear.
Ship Stability and Safety: Calculates and accounts for the vessel's trim, stability, and weight distribution.
Navigation Watches: Performs regular navigational watchkeeping duties on the bridge.
Deck Department Management: Leads, schedules, and supervises the deck crew, training junior officers and cadets.
Maintenance: Manages the upkeep of the ship's hull, cargo areas, and accommodation spaces.
Safety and Security: Maintains life-saving appliances (LSA) and fire-fighting appliances (FFA), coordinates emergency drills, and often acts as the Ship Security Officer (SSO).
Ballast and Environmental Control: Manages ballast and de-ballasting operations, garbage disposal, and environmental compliance under international codes.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensures adherence to international maritime laws, including SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, and the ISM/ISPS codes, while preparing the vessel for port state and class surveys.
Administration: Handles paperwork, cost control, inventory for the deck department, and crew welfare.
