Head of Laboratory -- Senior / Principal Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS/PMLS)

Job Summary

We seek an experienced Senior or Principal Medical Laboratory Scientist to lead the entire laboratory, supervise personnel, ensure reliable and timely results, and maintain professional and quality standards.

The successful candidate should have strong practical expertise in Chemical Pathology/Clinical Chemistry and experience coordinating other laboratory disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee daily operations across all laboratory sections.

Perform and supervise chemical pathology investigations and review results within professional competence.

Manage internal quality control, external quality assessment and corrective actions.

Ensure proper sample collection, identification, handling, storage and rejection procedures.

Oversee analyser calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting.

Supervise, train and assess laboratory staff and interns within their respective scopes of practice.

Maintain standard operating procedures, quality records and laboratory information systems.

Manage reagents and consumables, monitor expiry dates and minimise wastage.

Monitor turnaround times and ensure timely communication of critical results.

Maintain biosafety standards and prepare the laboratory for inspections and audits.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

BMLS/B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent MLSCN-recognised professional qualification, including a recognised associate qualification.

Full MLSCN registration and a current practising licence.

At least five years of relevant post-NYSC experience, including at least two years in a supervisory or laboratory leadership role.

Strong practical experience in Chemical Pathology/Clinical Chemistry.

Working knowledge of haematology, medical microbiology and other services offered by the laboratory.

Demonstrated competence in automated chemistry analysers, quality control, calibration and troubleshooting.

Strong leadership, communication, documentation and organisational skills.

Preferred Qualifications and Professional Experience

Relevant professional fellowship in Chemical Pathology/Clinical Chemistry recognised by MLSCN.

Master’s degree in Chemical Pathology, Clinical Chemistry or a closely related Medical Laboratory Science discipline.

Possession of both a relevant fellowship and master’s degree will be an added advantage.

Previous or current appointment as a Principal Medical Laboratory Scientist (PMLS), or equivalent laboratory leadership experience, will be an added advantage.

Experience implementing laboratory quality management systems and preparing for audits.
