About the role

We are recruiting on behalf of our client, a project management consultancy that plans, manages, and delivers projects on behalf of its own clients across a range of sectors.

Its work spans oil & gas, pipeline construction, building construction and infrastructure, and it also delivers Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Management (EPCM) contracts. Project management is at the heart of everything it does.

The Project Manager will join the company's core team. You will manage projects on behalf of the company's clients, leading each assignment from planning to close-out and being the single point of accountability for their safe delivery, on schedule, within budget, to the required quality and to the client's satisfaction. Tasks can be delegated to the project team, but accountability for project outcomes cannot.

Projects will vary by client, sector, size and complexity. One assignment may be an EPCM pipeline project; the next may be a building, infrastructure or other capital project in a different industry. The Project Manager must be able to apply sound project management principles to any type of project and quickly understand each client's business, sector and requirements.

This is a lean, hands-on environment. The company needs a project management expert who can work independently, use their initiative and find solutions, rather than someone who relies on a large, highly structured organization around them.

Responsibilities

Project planning:

Define scope, objectives, deliverables, assumptions, and constraints.

Develop the project execution plan, work breakdown structure (WBS), milestones and success criteria, and secure stakeholder approval.

Budget and resources:

Develop, forecast, and control the project budget.

Make efficient use of people, equipment, materials and funds, and take corrective action on any cost overrun.

Schedule management:

Build realistic schedules with clear milestones and critical path activities.

Track progress daily and weekly, identify delays early and implement recovery plans.

Risk and issue management:

Identify risks early and keep an active risk register with mitigation and contingency plans.

Solve problems at source and escalate critical issues while keeping ownership of their resolution.

Communication between departments and stakeholders:

Maintain a clear, steady flow of communication between the departments and disciplines involved in each project (for example, engineering, procurement, construction, finance and management), so that everyone works from the same information.

Keep the client, senior management and key stakeholders updated, working through the company's stakeholder management lead, on progress, risks and key decisions.

Quality assurance:

Ensure all work meets company standards, client requirements and international best practice through quality control and inspections.

Obtain client acceptance of deliverables and capture lessons learned.

Documentation and reporting:

Ensure project documentation is adequate, accurate and up to date at every stage, from plans, method statements and drawings to approvals, change orders and close-out reports.

Keep complete and auditable project records, including decisions, approvals and changes, and produce clear progress reports.

Team leadership:

Lead the project team, allocate work clearly, monitor performance and build a culture of accountability and delivery.

Health, safety and environment (HSE):

Enforce strict compliance with HSE requirements, the Nigerian regulations that apply to each project and the relevant industry standards.

Promote a proactive safety culture and ensure prompt corrective action after any incident.

Project management consulting:

Act as the client's trusted project management adviser, advising on project planning, controls, governance and delivery across different sectors.

Quickly understand each new client's industry, objectives and constraints, and tailor the project management approach to suit the project.

Review the status of client projects, identify gaps and risks, and recommend practical improvements to how they are planned and delivered.

Requirements

Qualifications and experience

B.Eng/B.Sc in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Petroleum or related), Quantity Surveying, Building, Architecture, Construction or Project Management, or a related discipline.

5–12 years' project management consulting experience.

Experience managing projects in more than one sector or industry, and in a project management consultancy or client-advisory role, is a strong advantage.

An industry expert with a proven record of delivering projects end-to-end.

You will be asked to give examples of projects you have delivered and the results achieved.

PMP or PRINCE2 certification is a strong advantage.

Ideal Client

The client is looking for a high-calibre, cerebral project leader who can deliver. You will be:

A problem solver and solution provider – You see a problem, think it through and come back with a workable solution, not just the issue.

Versatile – You can apply your project management expertise to any sector, quickly learn a new client's business and deliver in different environments.

Self-driven – You use your initiative, work independently and take ownership without waiting to be told.

Comfortable in a small environment – You thrive in a lean team where roles are broad, and you do not depend on a rigid structure to perform.

A sharp thinker – You analyze complex situations quickly, plan ahead and make sound decisions.

A proven deliverer – You have the experience and track record to show that you get projects done.

You anticipate problems before they happen, hold your team and subcontractors to high standards, and do not accept excuses for missed deadlines, budget overruns or unsafe work.

Work Culture

The company is built on competence, professionalism and excellence. It works to international standards and expects the same from every member of its team. You will be joining a group of high-calibre professionals who take pride in the quality of their work and the results they deliver.

Benefits

The client offers a very competitive salary and benefits package matched to experience and track record.
