About the role

Ensures every transaction is settled to the right party, on time, and that every balance in SAOPAY's systems agrees with those held at banks and partners. Performs daily settlement and reconciliation, investigates breaks to root cause and maintains audit-ready evidence. The role is independent of Finance; that independence is a control and must be preserved.

Key Responsibilities

• Daily settlement: Prepare and execute settlement files for merchants, agents, billers, banks, MNOs, switches and schemes per the settlement calendar and SLAs; submit instructions for maker-checker approval; track confirmations and chase failed settlements the same day.

• Daily reconciliation: Reconcile the platform ledger against bank statements, MNO, switch and scheme reports and wallet balances each business day; reconcile float, trust and safeguarding accounts against customer liabilities and report the position to the Operations Manager and Finance Manager.

• Break investigation and resolution: Log every break by age, value, category and owner; investigate to root cause and clear within policy TAT; escalate ageing and high-value breaks; prepare evidenced write-off and adjustment requests.

• Disputes, chargebacks and reversals: Process refunds, reversals and chargebacks per scheme rules and SOPs; maintain dispute logs and meet scheme and partner deadlines.

• Reporting and evidence: Produce daily settlement and reconciliation reports, weekly break ageing and month-end packs; provide evidence for regulatory returns and audits; retain records for the statutory period.

• Control and improvement: Operate strictly within maker-checker and segregation-of-duties controls; report suspected fraud to the Risk Officer and AMLRO; flag gaps against Global standards and propose fixes for recurring break causes.

Qualification Required & Experience

•Required: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Banking, Mathematics or a related field; 3+ years in settlement, reconciliation, treasury operations or payments back office in a bank, EMI, PSP, mobile money operator or switch; hands-on reconciliation of high-volume transaction data; experience preparing audit or regulatory evidence.

•Preferred: Part-qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, CPA or equivalent); payments or reconciliation certification; experience with scheme settlement files, MNO or switch reports and float accounts.

Competencies

•Technical: advanced spreadsheet and reconciliation tool skills (SQL an advantage); transaction lifecycles, settlement cycles and accounting entries; card scheme dispute rules; documentation discipline suited to audit scrutiny.

•Behavioural: execution discipline; analytical thinking; integrity; ownership; clear and factual communication.
