Accountant

Job Role

The Accountant is responsible for managing and supporting the company's day-to-day financial operations within the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry. The role involves maintaining accurate financial records, managing accounts payable and receivable, monitoring inventory-related transactions, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with statutory and financial regulations.

The ideal candidate should have strong accounting knowledge, excellent analytical skills, and experience handling high-volume transactions within a trading, retail, distribution, or FMCG environment.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Ensure accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions.

Maintain proper financial records and support effective financial management.

Monitor inventory-related costs, stock movements, and financial discrepancies.

Support cash flow management and cost-control initiatives.

Ensure compliance with statutory obligations and accounting standards.

Provide accurate financial reports to support management decision-making.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Accounting & Record Keeping

Record daily financial transactions, including sales, purchases, receipts, and payments.

Maintain accurate general ledger records and supporting financial documentation.

Prepare and process invoices, payment vouchers, journal entries, and reconciliations.

Maintain proper records of accounts payable and accounts receivable.

Ensure all financial transactions are supported by relevant documentation.

Accounts Payable & Receivable

Monitor customer accounts and follow up on outstanding payments.

Process supplier invoices and coordinate timely payments.

Reconcile supplier and customer statements.

Maintain accurate records of outstanding balances and payment schedules.

Investigate and resolve billing and payment discrepancies.

Inventory & Cost Management

Monitor and reconcile inventory-related financial records.

Work closely with the warehouse and operations teams to track stock movements.

Investigate stock variances, damaged goods, returns, and inventory discrepancies.

Support product costing and monitoring of operational expenses.

Prepare reports on inventory costs and related financial transactions.

Financial Reporting & Budgeting

Prepare periodic financial reports, including income and expenditure statements.

Assist in preparing monthly management accounts.

Monitor expenses against approved budgets and highlight variances.

Prepare bank reconciliations and cash flow reports.

Provide financial information to management to support business decisions.

Tax Compliance & Audit Support

Ensure compliance with applicable tax regulations and statutory requirements.

Assist in the preparation and filing of VAT, withholding tax, and other statutory returns.

Maintain proper financial records for internal and external audits.

Support audit processes by providing the required financial documentation.

Ensure adherence to established financial policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

CPA(K) qualification or progress towards completion will be an added advantage.

Minimum 2–3 years' experience in an accounting role, preferably within the FMCG, retail, or distribution industry.

Experience in inventory accounting, reconciliations, accounts payable, and receivable.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.

Good understanding of financial reporting and statutory compliance.
